Slate – A Volcanic Lava Rock for Home and Roof
To understand the formation of the rock we call slate, we must first travel back in time a few billion years. Like volcanic lava flowed across the floor, mixed with superheated ash loam. This mixture finally dried in layers, like slate, but much more difficult. Slate can be in sheets and plates can again into thin sheets.
Slate has been used for a range of applications over the years. A common use is as a natural form of roof shingles. Individual slate shingles are carved by hand of a master table, and sold to roofers and contractors. The tiles are off-line on a couple layers of tar paper and sealants. Slate shingles are desirable for their fragile natural durability and heat absorption, but can be individual shingles. Compared to other modern materials, gravel, shale can also be relatively expensive.
Slate is also the form of tiles for walkways and gardens. These tiles are usually thicker than roofing shingles, so they are not as likely to break or flake off. Slate tiles, it is known that in an irregular shape, which allows some creative applications.
